Besides the fact that Jay Gatsby was in a gang and could be considered a bootlegger, I would say that he is a romantic dreamer who’s pursuit is purely heroic. Gatsby spends his entire life hoping that one day he will be reunited with his true love Daisy. He even gets shot for protecting Daisy when she killed Myrtle. Gatsby lives a live full of prosperity, in hopes that one day he will be able to show off his assets to Daisy. Jay Gatsby is a romantic dreamer who dies a hero.
A romantic dreamer is someone who goes out of their way to get closer to the one they love. This exactly describes Jay Gatsby. He worked hard for three years to buy a mansion near Daisy. Gatsby also would throw fancy parties just so Daisy would attend. Most of the guest of his get-togethers were complete strangers. Narrator, Nick Carraway once said, “He has waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths, so that he could come over some afternoon to a strangers garden”.
Another quality of a romantic dreamer who’s pursuit is heroic would be taking up for the one you love. Gatsby takes blame for killing Myrtle when Daisy was the one who hit her. Daisy was actually driving Gatsby’s car. Myrtle was chasing Tom’s car. Tom and Gatsby happen to have the same yellow colored car. Wilson mistook Gatsby’s car for Tom. Therefore Wilson thought that Gatsby is the driver who had hit Myrtle with his car and did not stop to check on her. Nick asked Gatsby if Daisy is the one who actually hit Myrtle and Gatsby said, “Yes, but of course, I will say I was”.
Jay Gatsby is someone who lived a life full of prosperity. He wishes to live the American Dream. Gatsby has made his money himself, unlike Tom who was born into the riches. He also loves to travel the world and look for jewels. “I lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe (Paris, Venice, Rome) collecting jewels, chiefly rubies, hunting big game, painting a little, things for myself only, and trying to forget something very sad that happened to me a long time ago”, stated Jay Gatsby.
Gatsby is not a character who we should have distanced ourselves from. He spends his life hoping that one day his true love Daisy will love him once again. Gatsby takes the blame for Daisy accident. Which caused Gatsby to be shot by Wilson. He also lives a life full of prosperity. Gatsby worked hard his entire life to make his own money. Jay Gatsby is a romantic dreamer who’s pursuit is strictly heroic.
