Fall Days

Now and then

a brown mountain

lumbers along,

snuffling

at the silent creek-beds

once teeming with salmon.

He looks back

towards the shore

wishing,

wondering,

looking.

He dips his paw into the water,

watching the waters pass over it.

The current carries untold stories

over the jagged peak

to be safely stored

for next year.

The grizzly returns to his forest cave,

where he lies down

and waits patiently for the next spring.
