The modern horse is very different from its ancient ancestors. Horses have been around for millions of years. The earliest horses were much smaller and had many toes but have evolved into the larger, majestic single toed(hoofed) animals we see today. People began interacting with and domesticating horses around 5,000 years ago. Since then people have bred over 400 different breeds of horses. These breeds are used for many different purposes, from farming and ranching to racing and trail riding. Whatever the purpose, people find horses to be great companions.
