My family celebrates Day of the Dead every year. This is a fall/winter holiday that not everyone observes, as it falls over Halloween. Many families observe both, like mine. But, I personally prefer Day of the Dead more.
I like Day of the Dead because it has personal meaning. We celebrate and remember the lives of family members who have passed before us. I like helping my mom and sister set up our altar/ofrenda with photos, papel picado (colorful paper depicting skulls and skeletons), candles, and food offerings. The food is for their spirits to eat, so you should put their favorite foods from life.
I like going to search for the marigolds for the ofrenda, too. Did you know that we believe that marigolds act as a light from the “underworld” to bring our loved ones home on Day of the Dead?
