September 11 – A Legacy of Service
September 11 – A Legacy of Service

In the days after September 11, 2001, a large group of volunteers came together to offer their services. Many say the outpouring of love, care and generosity reflected during that time showed the best of America and Americans.

Some volunteers were in search parties, some fed the searchers and survivors, some offered medical care,  some raised money or supplies to send to affected areas, and some volunteers offered counseling and support to the victims of families. Many people saw this opportunity to volunteer as their (and their nation’s) first chance to grieve and to heal.

Since that day, 9/11 has become a day of service and volunteering for millions of Americans.

Write about one of the following:

  • A time when you helped someone or volunteered, and how it made you feel. What are the benefits of volunteering or helping those around you who are struggling?
  • Why would it be important for people in a community to help each other? How could this help a community be successful?
  • Do you feel that a day of volunteering is the best way to honor the victims of September 11? Why or why not?
